The Good Shepherd & the Cat in the Hat

Dr. Seuss’ birthday was this week. The kids at our preschool were celebrating with all sorts of Cat in the Hat ideas.

“Green Eggs & Ham” was my favorite (the book, not the actual food). The words are so simple – so memorable: “I would not, could not” forget them if I tried.

Then it hit me.

I bet I know the words to Green Eggs & Ham as well as (or better than) the 23rd Psalm! The Biblical words are simple – memorable, even more meaningful!

(Green Eggs & Ham has almost twice as many words, by the way…. 225 compared to the 117 in the 23rd Psalm.)

So, I’m motivated. I’m re-reading the 23rd Psalm. I’m going to try to commit to heart.

Nothing against Seuss. I just want to know the immortal words of the Good Shepherd better than anything else.

So, when I really need inspiration, then “I would not, could not” forget the words of the 23rd Psalm.

Read it with me:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul.
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anoinest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me, all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
