To Do: “Die to Self”

So, I was driving along, trying to get around this truck. I don’t like to ride behind trucks (it’s a visibility thing — or maybe just my impatience).

As I was yeilding onto I-66 & gettin’ my 4-cylinder Honda up to speed, I noticed a warning sticker on the back of the truck:

“If it’s not properly grounded, it’s not DEAD!”

Ok, it was an electrical contractor’s truck. So the message was an important reminder to ground your electrical cables – a live wire can kill ya!

Well, I took it as a word from the Lord. “If I’m not properly grounded…. I’m not dead – to myself.” Let me explain, in a gospel way: Die to self, Live to the Lord.

The spiritual disciplines *ground* us. (prayer, worship, sacraments, reading the Bible, devotional reading, simplicity, sacrificial giving, and more…see my blog Feb18 Lent: Ashes to Action… and especially R. Foster’s book, ”Celebration of Discipline”)

If we’re not properly grounded God’s way… we can really live God’s way.

So, I guess it’s true – God can speak to ya anywhere – even from the accleration lane on 66 from the back of a truck.

May you be grounded in God! Alive in Christ … as you die to self.

One slogan that made me stop and really reflect was the Gatorade slogan a little while back… “Is It In You” You may remember it.. people exercising and sweating Gatorade…. If that does not remind you of the Holy Spirit being in you and living for God, not sure what would….. When you ask God for help and to get you through the day, you had better hope God is with you, Gatorade only lasts for so long, God’s love is forever.

Is It In You? It’s in me! And I don’t want to ever let it out :-)

“a live wire can kill ya!”— they’re all around us, aren’t they? just waiting to spiritually kill.
