Thankful Hearts Make Disciples

“Well, thanks a lot.” I heard the man say in a huff, sarcastically, as he dropped his item on the store counter and stormed out the door. He was not happy. Nor was he really “thankful.”

This happens to people, perhaps more right now as times are tough for many people. I think that there’s a tendency for people to feel hurt, unhappy, worried & hurried – getting upset over more things, smaller things, now more than usual. Maybe it’s harder to be thankful this season.

I think it’s easier to be grateful the harder things get. Sometimes when things are going so smoothly, I forget to thank God. When I have it too easy, I can forget God entirely. I’m not thankful enough.

Also, this past week, I was driving on I-95 (I don’t recommend you do that, if you can help it). People were not really driving as much as they were racing & chasing each other down the highway. (I won’t mention the rate of speed – I’m not posting a public confession here – let me just say for the record “I just drive the speed of the traffic – umm, the middle lane traffic, not the fast lane.”)

One guy who didn’t like me in the passing lane – I guess ‘cause I just wasn’t “his speed” – gave some hand gesture. I thought, “I wonder if he’s going home for thanksgiving? I wonder what he’s thankful for – if at all?”

I tried to get my mind off the traffic and focused on what I am thankful for, right now: I’m thankful for my family, my kids especially, my relationship with God, my job, my home, and more than anything, salvation in Christ.

And I experienced God’s peace even on I-95 !!!!!

A Grateful Heart Makes a Home (anywhere). Have you ever thought about that? Wherever you are – whatever the circumstances – just pausing to thank God in your heart, & in your thoughts, even when you’re driving I-95!! This thanks is a gift. It helps you make yourself at home wherever you are.

My point? Be grateful to God – for God’s many promises, for God’s presence – for salvation! This grateful heart makes us the kind of disciples Jesus call us to be. Also, it’s a daily witness to others that you have a God who loves you & you know it & you show it.

Fountain of YOUTH

Throughout human history, people have been searching for a “fountain of youth.” I think I saw it today.

Our YOUTH led our worship service at Macedonia this morning. Their energy, their enthusiasm, their love — for the Lord, for the acts of worship, for people — encouraged & inspired everyone!

When I see someone smiling and having a good time when they are lifting up the name of the Lord, then I want to smile and do the same. Our young people are not only talented, they are trusting in God and acting in faith. Our youth are not only our future, they are our *today* as well.

So, I thought about this: what group of people has constant and continual YOUTH??!! All kinds of people grow old. It’s happened since the expulsion from the Garden of Eden – we’re born, we’re full of life in our youth; we grow old and then die. But is there a certain people who are always youth-full??

No? Well, consider the body of Christ. God’s people always have a strong contingent of children & youth… the church of Jesus Christ is a fountain of youth – right from the Baptismal fount. For 2000 years, the body of Christ has shared the love of Christ with the next generation, and so has kept itself as “young” as it is historic.

IF YOU want to “stay young” just stay connected with the body of Christ. And listen to the words of our youth today: Love One Another.

Now that’s a lesson we can live with, to have a heart that’s eternally young. THANK YOU, Macedonia YOUTH.

“No god” ?!

There’s a renewed effort to promote atheism. People are investing advertising space (large outdoor billboards) in order to try to convince people that there’s no god. Or, as some say, they are really intended to comfort atheists. Atheists make up less than 10% of America’s population (which, after all is the smallest percentage among civilized nations).

Recent news articles are explaining (?promoting) the campaign. Some claim that atheists are “lonely” around Christmas so these signs should remind them that they are not alone. [For an example go to http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=66323]

For many non-believers the biggest problem with Christianity is its people. Some Christians live with such hate or prejudice or have self-centered life-styles, that their “walk” speaks louder than their “talk.”

Here’s a thought for ya: is your life a billboard that says “there really isn’t any god out there”?
